Vietnam's first water polo appearance was in SEA Games 21 and lost every match by an average score of 18-3. With only 4 months preparation, the Vietnam National Water Polo Team, coached by Michael Belmes, came back in SEA Games 22 and played 2 historic matches, still the best SEA Games record in the history of Vietnam Water Polo.
Nhemia (Em Em) Velasco set 4 National Records after falling to bronchial pneumonia and missing 2 weeks of training just a few weeks before the ASEAN Championships. Her Gold Medal performance (and 4-Second Drop) in the 200 Butterfly was a testament to her hard work and never-give-up attitude. Her 400m Freestyle National Record has stood unbroken for 17 years!
